Elizabeth
To the east of the Uptown lies Elizabeth, Charlotte's second suburb,
with features similar to Dilworth: grid-style streets, restored
front-porch bungalows and sidewalks for wandering. Here you'll
find the beautiful Independence Park (Charlotte's oldest) and
Seventh Street shops and restaurants. Central Piedmont Community
College (CPCC) is located on the westernmost side of Elizabeth.
One of the major projects in the area is the $240 million, ten-year
Elizabeth Avenue redevelopment plan, is a collaborative effort
between Grubb Properties, Presbyterian Hospital and Central Piedmont
Community College and encompasses a six-block area between the
two institutions. This project envisions combining office, retail,
schools and open spaces into a walkable area. Another major project
nearby is the redevelopment of the former Midtown Square Mall.
A Home Depot Expo design center is scheduled to be one of the
first tenants. Elizabeth enjoys a mix of housing, from large stately
mansions to small bungalows and new townhomes, it can be found
here.
